愛子は中学２年生。父は１０年前にヨットで出かけて行方不明、母は帽子のデザインの仕事のためにパリへ行ってしまった。愛子は愛犬パピとともに母の兄である藤波おじさんの家で生活することになった。しかしある日、パピはトラックにはねられ、愛子の目の前で死んでしまう…。悲しみに打ちひしがれる愛子の目の前に現れたのは、デブで図々しいヘンテコな犬スパンク。姿は全く違っても、パピの生まれ変わりのようなスパンクに、最初は戸惑っていた愛子も、だんだんと親しんでいき、悲しみを忘れていく。
