乌克兰方面军进攻方向已定，但是前方森林中发现有德军坦克活动。方面军司令部先后派出几名侦察小分队，但都是一去不复返。情报处集中最优秀的侦察员组成最后一个侦察小分队，侦察员们穿上德军军装潜入森林。不久，指挥员斯毕林大尉身负重伤，由几名队员护送返回，但他们在归途中遭遇德军巡逻 队，护送队员全部牺牲，斯毕林大尉拉响手榴弹，与敌人同归于尽。与此同时，斯毕林大尉的恋人娜捷日达大尉率领小分队继续深入敌后...。然而德军早已发现红军侦察队的行踪——事实上，他们一直在诱使侦察小分队一步步走进包围圈。最后，侦察员们以鲜血和生命为代价得到孤了德军作战计划——德军阴谋在苏军装甲部队经过森林低地时炸毁河堤。在随身携带的无线电台被炸毁之后，侦察员们机智地截获德军无线电测向车，用明码将情报发出。司令部在电波中听到了小分队最后的命运：一阵猛烈的冲锋枪射击声之后，一切归于平静······
