Part I covers the Momoyama period of civil war through Nobunaga to Hideyoshi and tells of the rise of Tokugawa Ieasu and ends with the siege of Osaka castle in 1615. Part II covers the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1603 to the Shimabara rebellion in 1638, which led to the closure of Japan under Ieasu's grandson. Western influence, including Christianity, is important in this period. Part III covers the period of Japanese isolation, from the time of the Dutch concession in Nagasaki harbor up to the arrival of American commodore Matthew Perry in 1854. The Samurai class declines during this period as the merchant class rises, Japanese culture flourishes, and Edo (Tokyo) becomes the largest city in the world.

白马被人斩去首级后马头修炼成精,名唤白龙。因迷恋酷似生前主人的月娇，便救水生討好月娇，並使劲办法威逼利用月娇的丈夫金來让出給他。岂料月娇贞烈，宁死不屈，金來贪财，便灌醉月嬌逼其就範，馬頭精卻只享受月嬌像主人一樣幫他梳頭。月嬌雖保清白之身，卻受人非议，連金來也認為生米煮成熟飯，便安心享樂。 　　金來雖獲馬頭精的金銀珠寶，如願成為有錢人，卻是家庭破碎，鬱悶不樂。金來索性欲納水蓮為妾，水蓮得月嬌所救，因此得知馬頭精秘密，金來為保榮華富貴，奉馬頭精之命追殺水蓮。水蓮因緣際會得遇道士所救，乞求收服馬頭精。
