德川幕府时代，三代将军家光（沼田曜一 饰）准备参拜东照宫，途中需在宇都宫城落脚。宇都宫城主本多上野介（江見俊太郎 饰）与家老河村靭负（江川宇礼雄 饰）密谋，意欲借此良机杀害家光，拥立骏河大纳言为新一任将军。主仆二人定下奸计，将宇都宫的顶棚安放巨石，以伺机行凶。与此同时， 江户方面早已派出密探利根柳太郎（小笠原竜三郎 饰）调查宇都宫的情况。利根偶然救助木匠首领藤右卫门（岬洋二 饰）的女儿阿藤（藤木の実 饰），从女孩的口中得知绑架她的大商人键屋甚兵卫（三島雅夫 饰）与河村相互勾结，为非作歹；而修缮宇都宫的工匠们的口中言说的蹊跷又令她心生警觉。 　　将军的队伍越来越近，一场危机即将到来……

After the enforced absence of their father, three children move with their mother to Yorkshire, where during their adventures they attempt to discover the reason for his disappearance.

The story concerns the Waterbury family who move to "Three Chimneys", a house near the railway after the father, who works at the Foreign office, is imprisoned as a result of being falsely accused of selling state secrets to the Russians. The three children, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis, find amusement in watching the trains on the nearby railway line and waving to the passengers. They become friendly with Albert Perks, the station porter, and with the Old Gentleman who regularly takes the 9:15 down train. He is eventually able to help prove their father's innocence, and the family is reunited.The family also take care of the Russian exile, Mr Szczepansky,who came to England looking for his family (later located) and Jim, the grandson of the Old Gentleman,who suffers a broken leg in a tunnel.
