十七年前，兰珍（陈燕燕）为了丈夫康汉梁（王引）家能够后继有人，把自己的亲生女儿丢弃在长巷，暗地里领养了一个儿子。被弃的女婴被妓女（高宝树）抱走抚养。兰珍心里一直想念女儿，养子叔强（胡金铨）长大后不学好，于是兰珍在临终前把多年的秘密告诉康汉梁。康汉梁四处寻找亲生女儿（张剑飞），见到女儿和养母过得十分美满，人也很好，就不想拆散她们，自己悄悄地离开。
