故事发生在1945年，当时日军宣布投降，许多日本人开始撤离中国。高崎洋子（江韵辉 饰）是其中之一，她当时身患疾病，无法照顾未满周岁的女儿森下光子（程晓英 饰）。因此，她将女儿托付给了善良的陈嫂（欧阳儒秋 饰），并交给陈嫂一枚手镯作为信物，以便将来能够找回女儿。 　　过了几年，高崎通过邮寄手镯认出了她的女儿。女儿森下光子改名为陈秀兰，并与陈嫂以及她的哥哥陈建华分离。在1975年，中国和日本进行了一项合作工程，需要中国工程师的协助。陈建华，一位工程师，在文化大革命开始之后，因为曾经有一个日本妹妹而遭到了残酷的批判。为了能够顺利完成工程，陈建华被调回参与，而森下光子也作为日本专家小组成员来到中国。
