2014年，河南郑州为增强市区电力供应，一个新的热电厂施工项目在郑州西郊的荥阳动工。与此同时，为配合电厂修建，河南省文物考古研究院组织了一系列考古勘探活动，范围涵盖周围已拆迁城中村约700亩土地。2016年9月，发掘有了阶段性成果，一处成系统的墓葬群浮现。其中心位置，一座大型斜坡砖室大墓露出地表，屡遭盗挖的墓室里惊现神秘壁画，残缺不全的遗骸上还有刀痕。
