明治維新，是指19世紀60年代末日本在受到西方資本主義工業文明衝擊下所進行的，由上而下、具有資本主義性質的全盤西化與現代化改革運動。這次改革始於1868年明治天皇建立新政府，日本政府進行近代化政治改革，建立君主立憲政體。通過明治維新，日本的綜合國力迅速提高，並躋身帝國主義列強行列。日本帝國海軍、帝國大學等大量充滿軍國主義性質和國家榮譽感的社會、文化符號應運而生。日本最終走上了對外侵略擴張的軍國主義道路。

本片改编自直木奖作家池波正太郎的原作《色》，由资深导演松田定次酝酿多年倾力打造。它跳出以往作品对新选组副队长土方岁三 “冷酷” 一面的单一刻画，从 “恋爱的苦恼” 这一视角切入，描绘出一幅别具一格的时代画卷。片冈千惠藏饰演的土方岁三，以精湛演技展现了这位被称作 “鬼” 的剑客含泪的爱恋；而在本片中与千惠藏首次合作的淡岛千景，也出色演绎了对手戏角色 “阿房”。文久三年（1863 年），江户幕府为镇压勤王运动，召集武艺高强的浪人组建新选组，派遣至京都。这支精英队伍中，近藤勇、芹泽鸭、山南敬介、土方岁三、伊东甲子太郎、冲田总司、斋藤一等猛将齐聚，他们的活跃让京都沦为充斥暗杀与决斗、血腥难耐的城镇。其中，土方岁三始终紧随豪侠气质的队长近藤勇，作为新选组的幕后核心，令敌我双方都为之忌惮。然而，这样的他却与装束商 “山城屋” 的遗孀阿房相遇，并坠入爱河。阿房也因岁三与传闻截然不同的武士风范而心动，不知不觉间，两人频频私会。可越是深入理解彼此，这段无法许下未来承诺的爱恋，便在伊东甲子太郎一派脱组、鸟羽伏见之战等时局变迁中，渐渐蒙上了一层阴影。 　　这双臂膀，这胸膛，曾燃起炽热却又悲戚熄灭的爱火！ 　　动荡之世中，那团熊熊燃烧、最终怅然熄灭的爱恋之火！ 　　这部浪漫大作首次深挖 “剑之鬼” 土方岁三的人性光辉！

He stops at nothing to make himself richer and more powerful in the party and is involved in drugs, adult films, fraud (making up charities with the initials C.A.S.H when writing on cheques) and even murder but believes that he will never be caught as he is a Conservative MP and therefore all powerful. He has almost complete power over another MP - Piers Fletcher-Dervish who is nearly completely brainless. His wife Sarah B'Stard has very loose morals (both of them have affairs mostly every day) and has hated her husband from five minutes after they got married and tries to use Alan to get anything she wants. Each episode contains recent news items and Alan moves with the times with things like the end of the cold war, the Nazi hunt in the late 80's as well as the Animal Freedom Party. Keeping up with the huge amount of cash, Alan moves (in the 4th season) to the European Union to continue to make herself richer and to climb to the most powerful position he can reach...

本片讲述了数个发生在明治、大正、昭和时期的女性犯罪故事。 　　东洋阁事件：精明的宗方绢代（藤江リカ 饰）连杀数人，一步步实现霸占温泉旅馆东洋阁的野心；阿部定事件：女侍阿部定（賀川雪絵 饰）与主人石田吉藏（若杉英二 饰）深深相恋，情到浓时，竟不惜掐死对方，并割下爱人阳物随身携带；割阳事件：讲述两个分别发生在四国和静冈的残酷而有趣的事件；小平义雄事件：二战末期，小平义雄（小池朝雄 饰）失手杀死心仪的女孩，却由此唤起体内的兽性，在此之后连续杀害、强暴7名女性，被称为杀人鬼；高桥阿传事件：16岁的少女阿传（由美てる子 饰）所嫁丈夫身患怪病，全身溃烂不止。阿传伙同情夫杀害丈夫，从此跌入无间地狱。
