张天觉携女翠莺乘船赴江州上任。淮河风大浪急不不幸地船翻。父女被激流冲散。翠莺被老渔夫崔文远救起，翠莺感其救命之恩遂拜文远为义父。文远的侄儿崔通进京赶考暂居在此。崔通与翠莺朝夕相处萌生爱意，文远看在眼里知道二人情意，于是代为主婚，翠莺和崔通喜结良缘。不久，崔通进京应试与翠莺依依惜别。谁知他一试即中，接着好事连连，随即入赘考官赵钱之家并出任秦川为官。接踵而来的富贵荣华，崔通早把翠莺置之度外。翠莺久盼崔通毫无音讯。恰逢文远友人自秦川来提及崔通之事，翠莺始知真情因而悲伤之至。王员外因文远欠债无力偿还，欲以翠莺抵债。翠莺借机赴秦川寻夫，留下耳环为文远抵债。崔通见翠莺寻至此，竟不认其妻，反诬她为从其家偷东西逃走的婢女。并遵从恶毒的赵女之命将翠莺发配到沙门海岛。翠莺之父天觉自海上遇险得救后，现已升任提刑廉防使。外出时，因暴雨暂住临江驿馆一宿。翠莺被押解沙门海岛的途中备受解差的殴辱，此时因雨躲避在临江驿馆外。漆黑的午夜，翠莺深感身世悲哀放声大哭。哭声传到天觉耳中，由此父女得以重逢。翠莺将以往情形详告其父。天觉对崔通知法犯法大为震怒，即命翠莺亲自将崔通和赵女逮捕候审。张天觉握有先斩后奏之权，崔通被判诬良为盗，瞒妻再娶等罪，游街示众后斩决。崔通游街示众时遇到叔叔文远，求他去向翠莺父女说情。文远痛恨崔通的忘恩负义，但念及崔家仅此一儿，遂向天觉求情。天觉感文远救女之情答应放过崔通，决定将赵女发配到沙门海岛。从此，崔通感激不杀之恩与翠莺重归于好。
