戦災をうけなかった奈良に集って来た浮浪児のうち、豊太と源治とは奈良にある各寺院の案内人の説明を覚えて、参観客の多いときには案内人の手伝いをして生活していた。二人の先輩は、東大寺の末寺の小坊主になった一雲で、やはり元浮浪児だった。そして案内人の手伝をしていた一雲から、豊太と源治は説明の文句を教えられたのだった。そのうちに丹公と清次という後輩も出来、二人がお客の金を盗んだとき豊太は探しまわってお金を取りかえして持主にかえしに行った。彼らの仲よしはバスガールの節子と、落選彫刻家の良平だったが、そのうち源治は古道具屋の店先にあった子供の仏像が縁となって、それを買ったおばさんに貰われて行った。豊太は源治と別れて淋しくなったが、相変わらずラジオの尋ね人の時間はかかさず、帰って来ない父の消息を知ろうとする希望に生きていた。やがて、落選彫刻家の小父さんも東京へひきあげることになり一人ぼっちの豊太も連れて行ってくれることになった。その前夜、豊太は念願の通り一雲と一緒に大仏さまの掌の上で寝て見たのだった。
