Il venait à mes projections. Mais notre amitié a commencé quand il a fait son premier long métrage, Who’s That Knocking at My Door ? Mon frère Adolfas, Shirley Clarke et moi, on a rejoint Marty pour une émission radio de deux heures pour lancer son film. Nous avons passé un très bon moment. J’ai toujours la cassette. On m’a demandé de faire un film de dix minutes sur Marty pour introduire sa rétrospective au Centre Pompidou en 2005. À ce moment-là, Marty était en train de tourner Les Infiltrés. Je lui ai demandé si je pouvais le suivre une semaine ou deux, et il a accepté. C’est ainsi que le film s’est fait. Sebastian, mon fils, m'a rejoint avec une seconde caméra. J’ai fait une version courte, puis une plus longue. Comme j'étais très occupé par d’autres projets, j’ai demandé à Benn Northover, l’un de mes amis, de m'aider à le monter – j’avais quinze heures de rushes – et nous nous sommes beaucoup amusés parce que nous aimons tous Marty. The world of early 19th century England is usually seen through the eyes of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. Sue Perkins explores a dramatically different version of this world, as lived and recorded by the remarkable Anne Lister. 　　Anne was born in Halifax in 1791. A Yorkshire landowner, she was a polymath, autodidact and traveller who kept a detailed diary. Running to more than 4,000,000 words, the work ranks as one of the most important journals in English literature. Parts of Anne's epic diary were written in code: once deciphered they reveal graphic details of Anne's many love affairs with women. 　　Sue discovers that Anne was able to follow her sexual preferences in relative peace. It was only when she sought to profit from the Industrial Revolution by sinking a coal mine on her land that criticism of her private life became public. Anne acquired the capital for the mine from a wealthy female landowner, Anne Walker, with whom she enjoyed a relationship as close to marriage as the times would permit. 　　Sue finds out that what happened to Anne Lister's diaries after her death is almost as remarkable as the story of Anne's life.

Ken Russell's Most Unusual Film 　　It is hard to believe that Ken Russell was able to get this one "green-lighted" for release by a major American distributer as it is quite simply one of the strangest films to ever grace a screen! Russell, ever the visionary, takes the not so off-target view that Franz Liszt the pop star of his day and then offers viewers a comic book version of the composer's life and relationship with several infamous women and, most importantly, Richard Wagner. This film must be seen to be believed! And is a definite must-see for all Russell fans. It will also be appreciated by Roger Daltrey fans as this one captures Daltrey in his prime! Interesting musical work by Rick Wakeman and great set designs. It would be so cool to see this on DVD with director commentary! ...Maybe some day.
