Village life of the period (just before World War I) is well evoked, and the boy's relationship to his wastrel father, anxious mother, and the somewhat scornful village kids is treated with some feeling. It's a whimsical, rather drowsy film, overlaid with an unfortunate technical tricksiness and an insistent music score. Unexpectedly, it improves enormously with the boy's illness and his feverish hallucinations in hospital. Later, treated with a nicely quirky sense of humour, neither his crippled state nor his determination to overcome it are trivialised. Altogether a bit of an oddity, pleasant and irritating in equal proportions as it avoids the obvious pitfalls and then falls flat where least expected.

Seemingly 47,000 individual trees, it is unified by a single, interconnected root system, making it a ‘forest of one.’ Believed to be between 16,000 and 80,000 years old, it is the largest and heaviest known organism on land. Pando’s invisible root system is a guiding metaphor that emphasizes the interconnectedness between humans and non-human beings, as well as the notion of oneness described by many spiritual traditions. The footage was processed at home in the kitchen with an eco-friendly, coffee-based developer that leaves unpredictable inscriptions and traces on the film surface, at times creating visually abstract and speckled images. The filmmakers see this materially focused film practice as a form of devotion, and an opportunity to rethink ecological entanglements.
