吉武一、佐田猛達予科練の第一班には、歴戦の勇士で訓練の厳しい足立上曹が班長となっていた。吉武の父は応召し、母は父がもと働いていた家に住んでいたが、その家の女学生みどりは、吉武を秘かに愛していた。佐田は感化院にいた元不良少年で、面会に来た院長から後輩が托した腕時計の贈物をもらったが、次に敗戦を予知してやけな行動をとり、吉武と常に対立した。その果に彼は砂糖を盗んで班長に罰せられ、翌日無理して短艇競走に出場して死んだ。吉武はモールス通信競技の代表に選ばれ、勝てば二日間の休暇がもらえて、愛するみどりにも会えると、一心に練習を続けた。ところが応召した父が死に、みどりは挺身隊に出て脚を負傷したとの手紙を受取った上、さらにみどりの写真を班長に発見され、眼の前で焼かれてしまった。それらの打撃と身心の疲労で、モールス通信競技も失敗した。万事休した彼は、その夜脱走して母とみどりのもとへ帰って来るが、たちまち班長に発見されつれ戻された。そして、特別志願の募集に応募して、出陣する事になった。その直後、航空隊は激しい空襲をうけ、足立班長は班内に残った吉武を救おうとして爆死した。軍規に厳しかった彼も、死ぬ時には愛する南れい子という女性の手紙をにぎっていた。いよいよ吉武達が出陣する日が来た。だが、その日は八月十五日。ついに終戦の命が下ったのである。

在合唱队队形排练时，外貌清秀且个头不高的男孩姚晓辉被班主任排进了女生队伍。随后，在分发校服时，晓辉又意外地领到了一套女生校服。之后的每一天，晓辉都穿着这件与他性别不符的校服上课，本就内向寡言的他，没有向任何人说出这个错误，也不确定这是否真的是一个错误…… 　　学校的文艺汇演终于结束了，晓辉独自跑出休息室，远离了喧闹的人群。在空无一人的操场上，晓辉告别了这件本不属于他的校服。
