开机仪式上，杜若溪头戴红色赫本式礼帽，饰演富家小姐覃岚；宣璐身着土家服饰，扮演女匪龙秀。而最引人注目的当属万花丛中一点绿的赵鸿飞，他在剧中出演男一号林武。林武正直忠义、武艺超群，是新军里的年轻军官。这位高大帅气的男子在剧中艳遇不断，女匪龙秀第一眼见到他便心生爱慕。然而，林武遭奸人陷害，被迫上龙潭山落草为匪。此后，他的命运与覃岚交织在一起。一个富家小姐、一个山寨女匪，加上一个誓言复仇的汉子，他们之间将会上演怎样的感情纠葛呢？

覃岚 （ 杜若溪 饰）是一个生长在大汉口的学生，大革命的浪潮唤醒了她，她和同学相约投奔南方革命党，在寻找男友的路上，误落入清江土匪手中，被同样陷入匪窝的林武 （ 赵鸿飞 饰）所救，他们共同“血誓”趁机除掉了匪首，但是覃岚却落入阴谋中。在男友田正明 （ 周航 饰），大学同学革命者郑天游 （ 孙嘉麟 饰）的帮助下，覃岚从一个少女成长为女中豪杰，她消灭了土匪，打败了偷袭的北洋军，保护了田家寨的百姓，最后，和郑天游一起率领着寨民一起参加湘鄂西农民起义，建立工农红军游击队，继续革命事业 。

The dramatic events of the writer's life and work make for a story which itself reveals the quintessence of the film–maker's reflections on Japan and the Japanese people. The principal narrative strand is a lyrical monologue, that of the heroine, Miho Shimao, the writer's wife. She lives on a solitary island far into the ocean, with her handicapped daughter, shunning visitors. 　　She discovers herself through self–analysis, a form of catharsis brought on by the spiritual denudation of this existence. This proves to be the pivotal event in her life — a confined life, where actions have come to mean less than emotions. 　　The film–maker here reveals the contours of memory, the contrasts of feelings and the nuances of the psyche in an impressionist manner. 叙述在中日战争末期的台湾，一个小混混（柯俊雄饰），在目睹全镇人奋力协助中国政府对抗日军后，大彻大悟，决心做个顶天立地的中国人，最后以身殉国。这部影片与其它抗日片不同之处，是以梅花作为象征国族的叙事中心，然后再以此中心，作为人物描绘和情节发展的基点。首先是小学老师（胡茵梦饰）的殉节。胡被误会与日本军官有染，在家人和镇民不容之下，跳水自杀。全镇在了解真相后，为她举行追悼式，全体在小学生的引导下，合唱《梅花》……
