Chris Marker's elliptical, oblique documentary on the making of Akira Kurosawa's "Ran" is an uneasy blend of hagiography (usual Cahiers du Cinema stuff) and Marker's trademark meditations on the mediating role of technology in memory and the human experience, plus probably aging, and etc., etc., etc. These Gallicisms seem out-of-place; but the philosophies are easily discarded. What makes the film a pleasure are the glimpses we see of Kurosawa's work processes, in addition to all the detail and work that goes into the making of a true epic.

日本着名导演黑泽明享誉国际，深受世界各地的影迷爱戴。研究黑泽明电影的书籍和着作多如繁星，可是说到记录片却不多。早前曾有英国电视台为黑泽明拍摄了一部长篇记录片，介绍了他的生平，也访问了他的昔日同僚，但是欠缺黑泽明自己的自白。而且该片内容比较表面，只是入门级的作品，对于资深的影迷来说，并未能带来太多新意。相对来说，《来自黑泽明的信息：美好的电影》由黑泽久雄监督，收录了不少珍贵的访问片段，内容涉及黑泽明的电影哲学，非常适合进阶级的观众欣赏。 这部记录片分为十个章节，从剧本、分镜、美术、剪接、导技、摄影、服装、音乐等分析黑泽明制作电影的心得。全片以访问片段为主，配上一些旧片的拍摄花絮和片段，让观众能对黑泽明拍摄电影的过程有更深入的了解。此片难得之处，正是黑泽明生前接受过的访问片段。黑泽明纵横影坛数十年，拍片无数，但接受访问的次数不多。笔者以往对于黑泽明电影的研究和分析，多是从其他作家的着作而来，并非是他自己的表白。今次能看见他本人冗冗而谈自己的电影，绝对是千载难逢的机会。不过有一点比较可惜的是，片中的访问片段和摄制花絮很多都是集中在黑泽氏的后期作品如《八月狂想曲》和《枭枭夕阳红》等（看来这些片段是取自该几部电影的制作特辑）之上，一些经典旧作如《用心棒》、《武士勤王记》和《天国与地狱》等却鲜有提及。 黑泽明一向少谈自己作品的内容。他曾说自己拍片时并不刻意表达一个主题，一切皆以人物和故事的趣味性先行，主题往往在拍摄过程慢慢浮现。看来他所言非虚。在这部记录片里，当被问及电影的内容时，他都支吾以对，反而提到一些技术层面的问题时，他就显得很雀跃，愈谈愈兴奋。从访问片段亦可以理解得到他的成就并非偶然。虽然黑泽明已是公认的电影大师，但他却从不骄傲自大，经常表示自己对于电影还有不理解的地方，只是边拍边学。这种「活到老，学到老」的精神十分值得年青一辈的电影人学习。另外，当你听过他谈电影的拍摄心得后，会发觉他的确是一个电影天才。无论是写剧本、绘画分镜图、选取摄影角度、剪接等，他经常都只靠直觉行事，并不需要花太多时间研究和试验。这就是天才的魅力！ 这部电影的最大遗憾，就是片长太短，只有九十分钟，差不多每一个章节都有「到喉唔到肺」的感觉，十分吊瘾。不过正如片中黑泽和子所言，要谈黑泽明的电影哲学，并非三言两语便能概括。《来自黑泽明的信息：美好的电影》未必是一部全面的黑泽明电影百科全书，亦非一个很完全的大解构，但应当可以成为一个引子，唤起观众的兴趣对黑泽明的电影作进一步的探索。

该纪录片由东宝策划，以采访和片场录像等构成，记录了黑泽明在东宝执导的21部电影之制作过程，从准备阶段到经过摄影、剪辑到公映为止的轨迹得到了完整的重现。全剧共21集，分别对应21部电影，收录于东宝在日本分三套发售的“黒澤明 THE MASTERWORKS DVD BOXSET”。
