《正德演义》讲述的是明朝正德皇帝朱厚照的一生。他是明弘治皇帝的独子，从小不喜欢读书，只想游玩打猎。弘治皇帝病重，欲立储君，但四处找不到朱厚照。原来，他已经私自出宫，在棺材铺拜师学徒。这个不愿做皇帝的朱厚照，登基后又因不愿受各种礼法约束，于是全凭个人兴趣爱好治理政事。民间流传着许多有关他的传奇故事。 他崇尚武功，曾穿便装偷闯居庸关，到边境打仗；他喜爱青楼女子刘良女，从山西大同把她带回京师，甚至还想封她为皇后；他不愿上朝，在皇宫内修建“豹房”，饲养老虎、豹子，终日嬉闹其间；他赋予自己另一个身份——守备朱寿，然后让朱寿建功立业、封官晋爵，直至太师。
