影片敘述二次大戰尾聲，史達林統治時期，蘇聯西伯利亞境內名為Soutchan的港口小鎮上，12歲的小男孩Valerka的母親在蕭條的環境裡，為了活口而在家攬客為妓，這也迫使Valerka經常遊蕩街頭，在市場賣茶給當地礦工。在市場裡，他結識同樣賣茶的小女孩Galiya，兩人本是勁敵，卻開始建立友誼。相較於Galiya，Valerka世故老練，常以惡作劇作為情緒上的一種宣洩。但漸漸地，他的連串偏激行為一發不可收拾，最終迫使他離開小鎮。為了謀生，他加入幫派，開始打劫行徑，Galiya在此時伸出援手，但回家的路，對兩人來說，似乎不如想像中順利…。 　　本片以敏銳的筆觸呈現小男孩Valerka的世界，為求生存所做的一切努力，以及因其行徑而衍生的不堪後果，Valerka令人聯想到名導楚浮的童年化身安東。飾演主角的兩位小演員為非職業演員，自然生動的演技，印象深刻。1935年出生的Kanevsky，就是成長於這個鄰近海參威的小鎮裡，鎮上當年也有日本戰俘的集中營。本片中的背景與事件，都是他小時記憶，可視為他兒時記憶的重建。他也強調，他企圖在影片中真實呈現兒時的點滴，所以攝影機鏡頭是不可能為全知觀點，與其以客觀的紀錄，不如採用主觀的記憶。 　　全片為黑白攝影，深遠的影像中，帶出荒涼了無生氣的小鎮風景，企圖營造的冷酷氛圍，不只是在美學上的呈現，也帶有寓意的成分。Kanevsky精確掌控影片中所描述的時代氛圍，以及劇中角色的內心世界，他所描述蘇聯統治下的人民生活，也已擺脫其前輩們的陳腔濫調，令人驚豔。一個深沈有力、令人屏息的成長故事。

In sepia tones, the film moves back and forth among three periods in Robert Tucker's life: he's an old man, near death, in a nursing home at Christmas time; he's in middle age caring for his cheerful but dying mother; he's a lad at Catholic school, practicing his catechism, going to confession for the first time, receiving the Eucharist, surrounded by the singing of a children's choir. In middle age, he looks through his scrapbook of photographs of muscular men; he recalls lovers and his mother's cremation. A nurse sits beside him on his last night; in his last breath, he reaches forward and back..

The Midsomer Langley Film Society shows a retrospective of horror films made by local actress Stella Harris but Stella is upstaged when glamorous movie star Diana Davenport,her sister,returns to the area for the first time in forty years with film producer husband Cy. The same night Eve Lomax,a writer working on a book about Stella,is murdered,her neck punctured as if by a vampire.Eve was not popular with Stella or film society president Colin Yule,who claims Eve stole a photo of Stella. Stella's daughter Emma tells Barnaby that Eve's landlord,the married Patrick,was sexually harassing her whilst Patrick claims Eve had a secret lover. Then there are two further slayings,both in the manner of murders from Stella's films. Could they be connected to a family secret from over forty years ago,linking death and the divas?

Three children at play: a boy interested in war games and being in charge, a young girl who has tired of his domination and wants to fix him a pretend meal, and a newcomer, an older girl willing to cater to the boy but also mature enough to use her feminine attractions to gain her own control. The story ends with the young girl deserted by the boy and sadly returning home.
