종자골은 아이를 낳지 못하는 버림받은 땅이라 모두 떠나나 대처에서 송대물과 봉녀가 이 마을로 온다. 이첨지는 송대물을 며느리의 방에 들여보내 임신을 시키자 소문이 퍼진다. 노인들은 대를 잇기 위해 음모를 꾸미고 봉녀는 송대물이 변해가자 실망한다. 과수댁까지 임신을 하자 이첨지의 며느리는 물에 뛰어들어 자살을 한다. 마을 사람들은 송대물을 없애려고 하는데 고향을 떠난 순녀가 돌아와 마을사정을 알고 권총으로 송대물을 쏘아버린다. 그녀는 경성에서 헌병대장을 살해하고 미국으로 가기 전에 어머니를 만나러 왔다가 고향을 위해 희생한 것이다.
