乔家兄妹的父亲是东北大学教授，在九一八事变中，他和老伴、儿媳妇惨遭杀害，只有小女儿乔参雨带着幼小的侄子幸免于难。长子乔参天是张学良的副官，他违背张学良的不抵抗命令，奋起抗日，参加和推动了马占山的江桥抗战；二弟乔参霄在投奔黄埔军校后与家里长期失去联络；刚烈的小妹乔参雨杀鬼子报家仇国恨，她每次杀了日寇都蘸血在墙上写下“杀人者，长白女侠”，让日本人闻风丧胆。乔参天支持并辅佐张学良发动了西安事变，并意外见到了随李克农来西安的二弟乔参霄。西安事变后，乔参天辗转回到东北参加了抗联。抗战胜利后，乔参天作为代表来接收长春，家人却已经不可能大团圆了：乔参霄英勇战死，乔参雨的头颅被日本人泡在福尔马林溶液中。乔家兄妹不屈的气质存于民族记忆之中。
