本片改编自著名科幻作家乔·霍尔德曼（Joe Haldeman）1974年荣获大奖的科幻小说《永远的战争》（The Forever War）。早在20年前，莱德利·斯科特就有意将这部小说搬上大银幕，但当时版权归视觉特效大师理查德·埃德隆（Richard Edlund）所有，他一直打算亲自将其拍成电影，所以斯科特未能如愿。然而，20多年间理查德·埃德隆的《永远的战争》项目始终未能启动，直到最近他才把版权转让给了FOX2000公司，由斯科特的斯科特自由公司（Scott Free）负责制作。对此，斯科特认为，这本小说历经多年后更具时代意义，现在进行改编正当时。《永远的战争》是一部科幻史诗，堪称太空版的《奥德赛》（Odyssey），故事主要讲述一名士兵在太空深处与敌人作战数月后返回自己的星球，却发现那里已经过去了20年，一切都已面目全非。目前，制片公司正在为该片挑选编剧，很快就会有结果……
