1949年8月，解放福州的战斗即将打响。暗中为中共工作的吴石，为保证福州国军某师顺利起义，利用自己福州绥靖公署副主任的身份，冒险亲赴该部协调。不料，绥署主任朱绍良竟派宪兵跟来，令吴石即刻返回，吴石心中一紧，莫非他的身份已经暴露？不料竟是蒋介石调他赴台升任国防参谋部次长的委任状。到底是率部起义，还是深入虎穴，吴石纠结万分。好友吴仲禧反对吴石赴台，现在台湾白色恐怖十分严重，此去风险巨大。但吴石最终下定决心，毅然决定只身赴台。吴石希望副官聂曦留在福州迎接解放，聂曦却坚持追随吴石左右。吴石安排家人到香港暂避，便准备登机赴台，不料却在机场见到了妻儿，竟是蒋介石口谕命他携家眷履任，吴石不禁心下一沉……吴石一家到台湾后，台湾的白色恐怖远超想象，妻子儿女见到当街枪杀共产党人的血腥场面，几近崩溃，而战友的牺牲也让他心痛。

护国大帅林华雄因西域来犯故国疆土索性抛下妻儿，镇守边疆。这一镇守就是二十年，二十年后，林华雄回国寻妻寻子。却不料得到消息，自己爱妻因病身亡，儿子林星海也因此过的十分困苦，虽然与妻子赵佳佳诞下一子，但却为先天绝脉，为此，林星海夫妇二人不惜受辱受苦，也要救活儿子。

1949年8月，原本准备在福州迎接解放的吴石，突然被蒋介石任命为国民政府国防部次长。为给党组织获取更多情报，吴石遵照指示毅然前往台湾就职，他利用工作便利，陆续向中共华东局提供了诸如金门岛兵力变化、西南战役国军调动等重要情报。原本打算回上海的朱枫，在得知吴石原来的交通员牺牲、组织需要派新的交通员去台湾后，也毅然放弃阖家团圆的机会，只身前往台湾。吴石和朱枫密切合作，送出了多份重要情报。1950年2月，因叛徒出卖，吴石、朱枫、陈宝仓和聂曦等人不幸被捕。他们送出的舟山兵力部署图，帮助解放军顺利解放了舟山群岛，为全国解放事业作出了贡献。
