1949年，国民党在大陆的政权轰然倒塌，其残部纷纷撤入中国台湾。为取得全国的解放，共产党第三野战军继续向南挺进。王本利所在的独立师红六团是这次作战的主力，然而由于海上作战经验的缺乏，红六团九千多名官兵全部葬身海底。侥幸活下来的王本利为不忘这段惨痛的历史，以好友的名字更名为王山魁。抗美援朝胜利后，王山魁被新组建的海军政委卢信泉调至麾下，正式从一名陆军军官转变为海军副司令。在此期间，他与美丽的女军医许锦云结为夫妇，还卧薪尝胆钻研对抗国军千吨级战舰的刺刀战，并成功地以几艘驱逐舰和鱼雷舰击沉敌人的千吨级战舰“荆门号”和“樟江号”，为当年红六团的战友一血前耻。在接下来的几十年里，这位铁骨铮铮的汉子随新中国经历了无数的荣誉和磨难……
