夫の死をきっかけに婚家を追われたますは、子どもたちと無心に手毬を突いて遊ぶ良寛を見かけ、その温かい微笑みに目を奪われた。その後、ますは良寛の歌に感銘を受け、自分自身の生き方を見つめ直すために出家を決意する。当時、良寛は国上山にある国上寺のこじんまりした五合庵を定住の地としながら、立派な寺の住職になることを薦められても、「余分なものは何一ついらない」と全国を托鉢して歩いていた。行脚の途中、彼は自分の実家の没落ぶりを目の当たりにする。彼の家は越後の国出雲崎で代々名主をつとめ、幕府御用達金を扱う両替商の大店を営んでいた。嫡男であった良寛は、名主代理として罪人の処刑に立ち会ったり、理不尽なことを強いられる辛さに耐え兼ね、18歳で出家したのである。立ち去ろうとした良寛が泥棒と間違えられて村人に殴られているところへ、弟嫁のやすが通りかかった。久しぶりに対面した弟の由之は、家業没落や道楽息子・馬の助のことを嘆くが、良寛は馬の助に会うと過去の自分を重ねあわせ、「辛かろう」と涙をこぼす。一方、ますは貞心尼という法名を与えられ、小さな閻魔堂で良寛と会える日を想いつつ手毬を作っていた。彼女に想いを寄せる行商の左吉は、良寛の詩や逸話を聞かせて気を引こうとするが、貞心尼はさらに良寛に傾倒していく。ようやく良寛と対面できた貞心尼は、ふたりで無邪気に毬つきを楽しみ、良寛は彼女とのめぐり合わせに不思議なものを感じていた。2年後、良寛は床に伏せ、知らせを受けた貞心尼は彼を献身的に介抱する。そして良寛は彼を慕う人々に見守られ、安らかに息を引き取った。

The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich; his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.
