数奇な運命に翻弄されながらも歌手になることを望む主人公・峰のぞみの物語を描いた青春アニメ。アニメ作家・藤川桂介と漫画家のすずき真弓が少女コミック（当時は週刊少女コミック）で連載していた漫画が原作でもある。下町にあるおでん屋の娘・峰のぞみと、大財閥の令嬢・香田美紀はともに歌手を目指す10代の少女。実は、二人は十数年前の出生時に互いの立場を入れ替えられていた関係なのだが、そうとは知らない両者は互いをライバル視する。美紀が財力で芸能界にデビューした一方、酒場で歌唱を続けるのぞみ。日本各地をさまよいながらも、のぞみの歌はいつしか人々の心を魅了し……。本作の製作は虫プロが担当。同社のプロデューサーだった岸本吉功は、本作のメインスタッフである富野由悠季（当時は富野善幸）や安彦良和、星山博之らと、後年に設立したサンライズ（当時はサンライズスタジオ）で一緒に仕事をしている。
