真夏の島。父を海で亡くした小学生のたかしは、祖父の国松から漁を教わる。そこへ、東京での生活に疲れた悦子が、娘のかおりを連れて帰郷して来る。かおりは祖父の徳一と祖母のつねに大歓迎され、島の子供たちとも次第にうちとける。さらに、古道具屋のめずらしやはかおりに海の図鑑をくれ、彼女の海への興味は深まっていく。たかしの母・良江や、村一番の腕利き漁師コンゾは悦子の昔の同級生で、海とともに暮らす彼らが悦子には眩しい。一方、村にリゾートホテルを建てる計画が起こり、怪しげな不動産屋がうろついたりするが、村人たちは海は自分たちの財産だと譲らない。祭りが過ぎ、台風が来る。ある日、こっそり小舟で沖へ出たかおりたちは、潮に流され、見知らぬ島へ到着。不安な一夜を過ごすが、翌朝大人たちに助けられる。やがて夏は終わり、かおりは素晴らしい思い出を胸に東京に帰っていくのだった。...
