20世纪初，时任法国驻中国龙州、云南府(昆明)领事方苏雅(Auguste François)意识到，他在中国所看到的一切是他的法国同胞所不知道的，而且有可能即将消失。于是，他结合详细记录、照片、影像和实物收藏，制作了真实详尽的报告。在影像中，方苏雅记录下了当时中国的街头日常生活，以及游行、节庆、葬礼、传统戏剧表演等事件。 　　1905年5月，L. Gaumont & Cie公司的目录刊登了约60个镜头画面，并评价：“这是隐藏在真实中国背后的面纱。这是对至今仍然鲜为人知的东方风俗的一瞥。”
