故事设定在黑人权利运动时期（上世纪七十年代）的英国，主人公是一对充满激情的情侣Jas和Marcus。他们爱得死去活来，但理想和价值观驱使他们从政治活动家变成激进的极端主义者，爱情也面临终极考验。他们于1971年解救了一名政治犯，还在伦敦成立了一个地下激进组织，专门针对不公正的社会现象展开武力行动。在现实生活中，英国政治保安处的确成立了绝密的反谍报部门「Black Power Desk」，专门打击所有形式的黑人极端主义。

本片以第二次世界大战末期，在意大利登陆的美军攻破德军防线为背景，导演以令人感动的场面把美军从南部攻到北部期间所引发的一些意大利民间故事编成一部有连贯性的社会写实的电影，画面上的真实感，给予人们非常大的冲击，创下了意大利电影的新潮流……
