从师范学校毕业之后，方雪梅（王小蓉 饰）离开了大城市，只身一人前往边远山区，决定在那里成为一名乡村支教老师。抵达白云山大队后，忠厚老实的当地青年贵根（徐行 饰）接待了方雪梅，贵根性格老实肯干，任劳任怨，在他和当地的生产大队的帮助下，学校很快就有模有样的建立起来了。之后，方雪梅和贵根又走街串巷，说服乡亲们将孩子送进学校学习。 　　在帮忙建设学校的同时，贵根也产生了想要考学的念头，在方雪梅的帮助和辅导下，他每日挑灯夜读不懈努力，最终终于实现了梦想，考上了理想中的大学。而他和方雪梅，也因为这朝夕相处相濡以沫而渐渐产生了感情。
