For Aichi Triennale 2022, Weerasethakul collaborates with Japanese artists to create his first augmented and virtual reality performance and let visitors commune with invisible ghost-like presences, encounter sick and sleeping bodies, and experience time suspended in a circle. Weerasethakul, whose previous works have brought the invisible, inaudible and untouchable into our realm of the tangible, has greatly expanded the virtual space by making use of augmented and virtual reality. Fifteen audience members at a time are invited into a dark space to roam around, experiencing Weerasethakul’s visual poetry beyond the confines of language, soundscapes of silent waves by Sakamoto Ryuichi, and interactive particles of light floating through the air... They are invited into the depths of memory and existence in a dreamlike world where the origins of life and the afterlife coexist.

My grandfather was Leo Hurwitz. If you don't know this name, it is understandable. Leo Hurwitz is recongnized as one of the founding fathers of the documentary genre. He along with his production company, called Frontier Films, made several very important films including Native Land, seen as one of the greatest documentaries of all time. His was to be a quite successful carear. This all came crashing to a halt, when his name was named by Elia Kazan. He was relegated to small low budget work, none of which ever gained noteriety, as we was forbidden to work on any major project. What makes this worse, is that, though my Grandfather had many socialist ideals, he was not a communist. He was a firm believer in democracy. His carear was ended because someone thought he was communist. Think about that, when you talk about this man.

法国先锋及地下电影史上最杰出作品之一。导演菲利普.加瑞尔是横跨法国"新浪潮"与"后新浪潮"两个时代之间的一个特殊人物。1948年出生的加瑞尔在16岁时摄制的一部短片就让他得到了"电影兰波"的称号，法国影评界认为加瑞尔的电影，填补了"新浪潮"留下的几处空白。他70年代早期的作品具有强烈的个人实验化风格，以及悔涩的隐喻性思维，影片的探索性和艺术性极高，往往在极少的人物活动，超写实的场景和画面中大量运用长镜头和跟拍手法象征化地表现一种强烈怪异的孤独感，在他早期的作品中，往往没有任何情节和对话。本片就是其早期先锋作品中的一部杰出代表作，影片女主角由德国前卫女歌手NICO出演，他自己则亲自扮演男主角魔鬼，全片基本上无任何直线叙述型情节，对白极少，唯一听到的只有女主角的哭泣，嚎叫和NICO那标志般痛苦悲凉的歌声，全片所有场景在一片沙漠中完成，只有几个角色，魔鬼，被魔鬼所控制的女人，摆脱魔鬼后新生的婴儿，孩童。导演试图用空旷干枯一望无际的沙漠来表现被心魔附体的女人内心孤独痛苦的世界，女人种种反抗后终于摆脱了魔鬼的控制，她看到了自己灵魂的火焰和生命的意义，一个新的生命的诞生。 　　 　　这是一部令人难忘的前卫电影杰作。导演菲利普.加瑞尔从80年代初开始改变电影风格，也拍出了像《我再也听不见吉他声》《爱情的诞生》《野天真》这样的优秀剧情片，但与其早期的风格相距甚远。 　　 　　女主角扮演者NICO是德国著名女歌手，与地下丝绒合作创作音乐，60年代早期被美国著名波普艺术大师安迪沃荷发现并带入影坛，拍摄过《雀西女郎》等多部艺术电影，69年在法国认识导演菲利普.加瑞尔，并与之合作了近10部前卫艺术电影。 　　 　　NICO亲自为本片做的电影原声是其歌手生涯中最好的唱片之一。
