很久以前，一只大灵狐被三槌家奉为守护神。其名为空幻，虽然它擅长各种法术头脑又聪明，却因为喜欢不停的捣蛋，最后被三槌家的祭司封印到了后山的祠堂中。时光流逝，到了现代，三槌家的末代子孙高上透梦见了女性的妖怪，透的母亲是三槌一族中本家的大巫，她从中发现了即将到来的危险，为了保护透，空幻作为他的守护神从封印中得以解放。不过被放出来的空幻却和人们传说中的大灵狐的印象大相径庭，是个平常在家中滚来滚去，还被透叫它“小空”的家伙。当化身为人类的时候，空幻就会变成绝世的美女，而且还可以男女互换！？而就是这样的空幻，以自己超凡的能力将逼近透的种种事件一一解决，自此空幻和透，还有透的哥哥升、三槌家的守护者——红纷纷被卷入，不可思议的的故事就这样开始了。

天狐空幻（以下简称空）是三槌家守护神。然而三槌家的末代祭司美夜子去世後已无嗣後，于是空奉三槌家前往保护美夜子的儿子高上兄弟。原文中的「稲荷さま」原先指的不是狐仙，而是狐仙、妖狐侍奉的神，因为狐狸是稻荷神的注册商标，因此日本称法力高强的狐仙为稻荷神，并在各地都有供奉。故事的「天狐空幻」，就是因为法力高强被奉为稻荷神的代表之一。高上透拥有遗传自三槌家的强大灵力，最後成为妖怪的下手对象。三槌家的长老（婆婆）预测到这件事情，便命高上兄弟的叔叔将兄弟俩召回。此外，为了驱除想接近三槌传人的妖怪，将因为调皮捣蛋而被封印上百年的守护神─「天狐空幻」放出来，以此保护高上兄弟。因为三槌家一脉单传，只传授三槌家的女巫，而高上兄弟的母亲美夜子过世之後，三槌家正式宣告後继无人。因此，空以「高上家的守护神」身分，跟著高上兄弟回到东京。而原本专门侍奉三槌家的守护女「红」，也因此成为了「高上家的守护女」。然而，私人的守护神能否自在的使用五行法术，必须得到当地土地神的允许。而当地的土地神─「惠比寿」(出自日本「七福神」)，却是个视财如命、心怀鬼胎，恶作剧之心不下天狐空幻的「便利商店店长」。而且还有许……
