故事讲述主人公林市幼年期间丧父，而母亲则被日军强暴后自杀身亡。籍此，她由叔叔抚养长大。由于生活困难，林叔为减轻生活负担，而将年轻的林市嫁给了屠夫陈江水，结果粗俗的江水新婚之夜就对林市施暴。林市不懂世事，往往依赖邻妇罔官的言论为社会标准。她虽然无法忍受江水的粗暴和虐待，但为了能勉强生存下去，也只好如同大多数同时代的家庭女性般地认命，试图暂时求得温饱，并以能打入村中妇女小社会为满足。罔官守寡多年，心态狭隘，经常与媳妇和彩发生争执。某日里因和彩揭穿她私通阿吉的情事，羞愧难当就忿而上吊，结果就被江水救下。结果她却因心理不平衡，转而怨恨江水对她的冷淡，故恩将仇报四处散播林市夜间房事时哀叫，结果林市不巧听到。但江水听到后，在夜间强迫林市发生性行为时更要逼迫着林市哀叫，林市忍痛不叫，却遭来了更疯狂的虐待与施暴。江水在林市身上得不到性欲的满足，就更加兽性地虐待她，不给她饭吃。结果林市在饥迫之下四处寻求工作讨饭，恍惚中昏倒在路旁，江水倍觉受辱，就索性将林市带到了猪灶，企图以猪灶之恐怖迫她就范，结果林市当场就被吓晕，由此神情更为恍惚。但兽性的江水却仍不肯善罢甘休，还要对林市发泄兽欲，并污言秽语地辱骂林市死去的母亲。最终，林市在精神恍惚下，用杀猪的屠刀杀死了陈江水。虽然林市以暴力的手段为自己的权益做了一个了解，但她仍旧无法得到法律与乡民们的同情，她被示众后按律处死，而她悲惨、不幸的一生，也只能在一个道德悲剧中落寞地结束。
