Foča is a municipality in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina where women were raped and abused on a large scale during the Bosnian war. Women, and girls as young as 12 years old, were imprisoned at various locations to be gang-raped, mostly by Serbian fighters. This was cause for the Yugoslavia Tribunal to designate “systematic rape” and “sexual slavery”—war crimes that frequently went unprosecuted—as torture and crimes against humanity. 1937年，日本军国主义的铁蹄践踏了文明古城北平。著名学界泰斗吴明泰携助手舒立娟毅然回到北平，临危受命，担任北平京华大学校长，为粉碎日本军国主义的“大东亚文化战略”，亲领柳剑白、尚文井、陈敬庄等爱国学者，历经艰险，忍辱负重，将大学南迁长沙，最后到昆明，保护了大批莘莘学子。抗战结束后，吴明泰又率领学人回迁北平。国民政府腐朽没落，在以胡思良为代表的中共地下党人的努力下，吴明泰等学人不顾蒋介石真金白银的诱惑，坚决抵制南迁台湾，粉碎了国民党所谓的“拯救学人计划”，毅然留在北京，迎来新中国的诞生。

渔民古大牛﹝石坚﹞与儿子古阿细﹝张雷﹞及伙记等捕鱼后准备上岸，从收音机得悉附近有一渔船沉没，众议论纷纷之际，阿细突发现一人浮沉于海中，众人遂合力将之救起，原来此人原是越南华侨难民江谅生﹝朱江﹞。谅生在越南原是银行贷款员，与妻及儿子乘船偷渡来港欲到美国发展，在海难期间与妻儿失散，二人生死未卜。 　　大牛得悉谅生身世后，决定暂时将他安顿在家，并嘱咐谅生尽快联络其在美国的家人。寄住古家期间，大牛幼女古阿花﹝欧阳佩珊﹞，经常借故亲近，大牛看在眼里甚感不妥。谅生亦明白自己在古家，甚至香港乃过客身分，遂决定离开古家，向外一闯。究竟心感怀才不遇的谅生，最后能否凭自己的实力在香港立足，在这个动荡的年代找到人生中理想的安居之所呢？
