中国禅宗从六祖慧能以后演变为五家宗派，各派法脉代代相传，繁盛于唐宋，可是从元代至明清，沩仰、法眼两宗相失传，云门、临济、曹洞也慢慢衰落，直到虚云老和尚以一生之力复兴五宗，传诸后世。而当时十九岁的净慧法师一人接承五家法脉，净慧法师回忆道：“当时我也没有想到会成为他老人家的接法弟子，但是既然得到这一纸源流，不管是生活怎么样地颠沛流离，这个责任感从来都没有放弃过。”老和尚讲的生活禅，他有他自己真实的受用，老和尚做到了他说的，他说的是他做的。他总是给人一种从容不迫，很悠闲的状态，事实上呢，他永远也都没有停止过为各种各样的事情忙碌，他能够当机立断，不失应对，不会丢三落四，他永远在最松驰，同时又最专注的状态一触即发，这就是禅的修行。
