某机械厂党委把培养一批新徒工的任务，交给参加过“二七”和“五卅”罢工的老工人刘廷栋及其徒弟赵正昌等人。来自农村的新徒工李铁柱，和小商人出身的新徒工夏泉产生了矛盾。夏为了吓唬李，故意将李使用的卡钳拿走，从而引起了一场风波。后在刘廷栋的耐心教育下，夏将卡钳还给了李。赵正昌用那把卡钳的历史启发了他们的阶级觉悟。徒工学习期满后，李、夏等走上工作岗位，临别前，赵把那把卡钳送给了李。
