改编自“跨掉派作家”威廉·巴罗斯的同名小说。描述的是主人公威廉·李的瘾君子生活以及与其千丝万缕瓜葛的地下社会——处方医生、警察、律师、毒贩、政客、监狱、医院和戒毒所，琳琅满目。JUNK一词指迷幻剂，巴罗斯原本想以此为标题，但出版商为了避免与“废品”完全雷同，故加上形容词后缀Y。1953年初版时作者署名为威廉·李。（Lee是巴罗斯母亲的姓氏。）
