第二次大戦末期から敗戦後を舞台に、戦争に翻弄される男女のメロドラマ。急遽降板の女優の代役に抜擢された司葉子が、実力派・丸山誠治監督のメガホンで映画デビューを飾る注目作。出征した親友に妹・礼子（若山）との結婚を託された亘（池部）は、母の入院先の看護婦・久美子（司）への愛を捨てきれずにいた。敗戦後、故郷の広島で被爆した久美子は、心身に傷を負いつつ地元の保育園で働いていたが、診療を受けるべく上京し、礼子と婚約間近の亘と再会する。
