The father of the past (who has died of Tuberculosis, revealed shockingly), the mother's current liaison, and the son's wife all re-enforce roles of sexual inadequacy with the two main characters (Mother, Shizuko, and son, Shizuo). Time is blended together, and the film ends up being an incredibly interesting melodrama with much of the (Japanese new wave staple) political put on backburner. A subplot involving the son's lack of sexual interest in his wife, and his mother's lack of sexual fulfillment in her lover (husband to be, I'm not sure) adds to the development of the incest tone.

硕奉和宥娜是对夫妻，他们隔壁住着惠民和智秀。与过着模范家庭生活的硕奉和宥娜夫妇不同，惠民和智秀是对自由奔放的情侣，不过，硕奉与宥娜对于床事彼此都无法获得满足。某日，惠民查觉到宥娜的孤独，智秀也知道了这件事，这对情侣于是决定帮助这对夫妇。硕奉和宥娜在他们的指导下，重新获得夫妻生活的乐趣。但随着时间的流逝，再次面临倦怠期的夫妇，再次向这对情侣求助……

前国民党高级将领史伯言走下飞机的舷梯，终于在几十年后回到了祖国大陆探亲。在女儿女婿的陪同下，他要在南京寻找自己的母亲。无意之中，史伯言与一位中国人民解放军的现役老军人邂逅，原来他正是史伯言同村同族的兄弟史海良。他们一起长大、参军、打日本鬼子，也曾在解放战争里多次交手。史伯言心绪万千，没有勇气去认史海良。后来，史伯言终于找到了自己的母亲，原来几十年来，一直是史海良在照顾他的母亲。在中秋之夜，大家终于相认了，两个亲密地走到一起。

新加坡华侨何平，因为被控告谋财害命而被判处以死刑，何平不甘心就这样含冤而死，因此在执行死刑的前一天，和狱中的牢友一起越狱。然而逃亡途中，何平无意间传进了当日宣判他死刑的法官家中，与法官及其侄女剑秋相遇。剑秋的父亲因含冤而死，所以剑秋对何平的遭遇也心生同情，不但帮助何平逃 避警察的追击，还细心照顾他，自然而然地两人也互有好感，剑秋更想办法让何平离开苏州，找机会洗刷冤情。
