A Common Sequence examines shifts of life and labor through a critically-endangered salamander and plant patents in the apple industry. He trained in painting and sculpting, but shortly after, he put the materials aside, embraced conceptual art and wagered for its dematerialization, placing the audience’s experience at the center. “There is a lapse of time that is space,” he states and reveals his synthetized obsessions in this, his first film. 曹斐从早期创作就一直强化与日常生活的联系，以及对周遭都市生活的观察，并逐渐发展出独有的影像表达方式。这部短片拍摄于广州繁忙街道的一角，曹斐将镜头对准一位旁若无人起舞的中年男子。他的动作带着些许滑稽，既像是舞蹈又像是某种体操，但他自得其乐地投入其中，还时不时为匆匆走过的行人送上飞吻。曹斐为短片挑选的配乐——1954年的经典老歌《给我一个吻》，与男子的舞蹈完全融为一体。在这短暂的片刻，男子似乎成为公共空间甚至是这座都市的主人，整个街道就是他的舞台，车灯就是灯光，而路人就是观众。

在时长约31分钟的该片中，所记录下的公共场所包括：一个郊区小火车站深夜的候车室、一个矿区附近黄昏时分的汽车站、一辆不知开往何方向的公共汽车、一个由废弃公共汽车改造成的小餐馆和一个长途汽车站的候车室（兼具台球厅、舞厅等多种功能）。 　　此外，影片还记录下了在这些公共空间里来来往往的人们某些时间段的行为：一个穿军大衣的中年男子一直在等待，终于等来一个年纪相仿的女人提着一袋沉甸甸的面粉从走下火车；一个老人在铁栏后极其耐心地拉好上衣的拉链，汽车把老人带走，却落下一个气喘吁吁的年轻女子，在她百无聊赖地等待下一辆汽车到来时，矿区的天空下响起钟声；如此，等等。

姜哲中是一个我行我素的刑警，他经常收受贿赂，私放罪犯，至于敲诈勒索，白吃白喝则是家常便饭。他受到纪律检查部门立案调查，没想到他的拍档在此时饮弹自戕，一批数目巨大的毒品不知去向。检查部门去搜查哲中的家，却一无所获，他的过分清贫倒引起上级的怀疑。一个雨夜，哲中在一个狭窄的小巷执勤时与一个穿着雨衣的神秘男人擦身而过，他照例耍起了威风想吓唬对方，不料那人也非善类，操起手中的利刀向他猛刺后迅速逃跑，在哲中脸上留下深深的伤口。哲中拣起那人掉下的猎刀，发誓要抓住他狠狠的报复……
