蘇珊‧宋塔是美國著名女性主義評論家及作家，《卡爾兄弟》是她1971年在瑞典執導的作品，片中主角是四個各自面對生命難題的成人，凱倫因此女兒患有自閉而心煩不已，蕾娜想試圖挽回昔日愛人馬丁的心，馬丁遇上創作的瓶頸，卡爾則是受不了壓力而陷入痛苦封閉的深淵，這四人共同來到島上，雷娜向馬丁求愛遭到拒絕，她因此憤而自殺，她的死讓凱倫及卡爾大受打擊，最後卡爾來到凱倫的家，並與凱倫患有自閉症的女兒培養出奇特的情誼。
