The young Konrad labors to sort copper ore and dreams of a new life across the Atlantic. When the new Swedish foreman Wennström arrives to increase the mine's production pace, Konrad sees an opportunity to advance. Wennström recruits Konrad as an informant, but Konrad soon realizes he has made a pact with the devil as a workers' revolt looms ever closer.
