万家有两姐妹。姐姐叫万如华，与丁宇光相爱，拒不嫁表兄章志容，被父亲万古愚赶出家门，妹妹叫万如玉，顺从父命代姐嫁给了章志容。丁宇光的父亲丁世芳自己纳了宠妾，却不准儿子自由择偶，闻知丁宇光欲与万如华成婚，亦将宇光逐出家门。丁宇光从此更名丁尚工，与如华一道远走他乡。一转眼，宇光和如华的儿子一新已经15岁了，而宇光却因劳累过度一病不起。一日，宇光趁一新不在家，拿出一家三口的照片叫如华去邮局寄给父亲，自己给儿子写下遗嘱，要他做一辈子光荣的工人。写罢，即气绝身亡。此时的丁世芳亦身患重病，其妾又与别人私通，郁闷的丁世芳十分想念自己的儿子，收到宇光寄来的照片极为高兴。丁世芳得知正在此地招股的章志容与宇光同在一厂，即托他带去路费，请儿子一家三口回家。章志容回到工厂，方知宇光（丁尚工）已死，归家时正遇债主金福山上门讨债。被逼得走投无路的章志容忽然发现，自己的妻儿与照片上如华母子的容貌一模一样，而他与如玉的儿子小容也正好15岁，遂与金福山商定，要妻儿到丁家冒名顶替，骗取钱财。与此同时，派人赶如华母子搬家。如华忧愤成疾，不久，亦郁郁而亡。从此，丁一新就跟着好心的邻居林贵荣，到工厂做工，当上了小工人。一日，丁世芳带着假儿媳和孙子，到南江市给宇光上坟，被工厂经理请去参观工厂。丁世芳看见正在做工的一新和自己的孙子容貌相同，怜爱之心顿生，遂邀丁一新随其返家。金福山怕阴谋败露，企图加害一新，幸林贵荣及时赶到，一新方免一死。金福山又唆使章志荣赶到丁家绑架一新，并逼如玉毒死丁世芳。善良的小容不忍一新受伤害，悄悄与一新换了床。晚上，章志荣正要持刀行凶，却发现躺在床上的是自己的儿子。小容指责父亲为了钱财丧尽天良。章志容闻言深受震动，决心自首。阴险的金福山先下了手，将章志容父子绑了起来，准备送官请赏。如玉辗转一夜，终未下毒。清晨，发现小容失踪，晕倒在地。一新赶来将她救醒，如玉深感愧疚，即将全部真相告知丁世芳。丁世芳通知警方将金福山一伙逮捕法办。在如玉、一新及小容的一再恳求下，丁世芳饶恕了章志容。丁世芳意识到，没有正当职业的游民最易犯罪，于是决定慷慨出资，兴办工厂。一新和小容满怀希望，携手走进工厂。
