American Photography: A Century of Images is a remarkably complete, high-caliber PBS presentation of who Americans were and are, using 20th-century images that capture everything from the everyday to the once-in-a-lifetime. While of course you'll see many photographs, some familiar and some new, you'll also learn about the history of our relationship with photography and the ways pictures are used. See the progression from posed to unposed photographs and from picture postcards to digitally enhanced photos that show what a missing child might look like today. Learn about the importance of photography for social causes such as abolishing child labor, the civil rights movement in America, and the way we feel about everything from what we buy and how we dress to how we get the news. Especially interesting is the discussion of how Native Americans have been portrayed--including the photographer who brought a trunk of costumes with him to dress Native Americans the way he wanted them to look in his pictures.

The film depicts the Lumière Brothers discussing and examining their Cinématographe machine. The sequence was filmed by the Paris-based cameraman Frédéric Fesneau in the Lumière's laboratory in Lyon, France, on July 14, 1925. A portion of the film was used for a Fox News story on the Lumières, which would have been screened as part of a longer newsreel program shown before a silent feature in 1925-6. Over the 93 years since it was first shot, this film has been stored in several facilities. Since the early 1980s, the film has been archived at the Moving Image Research Collections at the University of South Carolina, as MVTN A8398 8399 Lumiere Brothers. During that time, the nitrate film stock originally used to record the Lumières has begun to deteriorate. All the degradation to the image seen here has been caused organically as a result of its natural decomposition.

Godard undertook a collaborative project with the U.S. filmmakers Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker in October of 1968. Provisionally entitled One A.M., or "One American Movie", the project was to be shot in the United States, but never reached completion under Godard's direction. Pennebaker and Leacock continued with the project under the title One P.M. [1972], or 'One Parallel Movie,' and did not release the film until 1972.
