老挝，古称“万象之国”，历史源远流长、自然景观壮丽、宗教传统根基深厚。历史上，老挝跟周边邻国多有纷争，饱受越南和暹罗的侵略之苦；在越南战争中，老挝经历了种种摧残，美军投放在这里的很多炸弹至今未曾引爆，依然威胁着部分老挝人民的生命安全。法国殖民时期，老挝人民与殖民者展开了不屈不挠的斗争，最终获得了民族独立。万象、琅勃拉邦以及巴色这些历史悠久的城市，有很多名胜古迹，比如玉佛寺、迈佛寺、蓝色泻湖、瓦普神庙建筑群等。如今的老挝散发出现代风采，海洋公园、购物中心、水电大坝等，为国家经济发展助了一臂之力。

HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS is an eye-opening documentary about an ongoing, but unknown, genocide on the Hmong Lao people, running and hiding from Laotian and Vietnamese military aggressions in the remote mountainous regions of Laos. Many Hmong, who fought as CIA soldiers during the Secret War, retreated into the inaccessible mountains of Laos after the U.S. pulled out in 1975. They became targets of persecution and retaliation due to their role in the Vietnam War. While most Lao-Hmong are integrated into their country and many Hmong surrendered and continue to come out of the jungle to this day, there are disturbing reports of transgressions by the Lao PDR authorities towards those still in hiding. Over thirty years and a generation later the Hmong-in-hiding are attacked, chased, raped and killed by Laotian soldiers. Those who surrender face an uncertain fate. HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS demonstrates that the Hmong-in-hiding in the Laotian military training areas are going through. They endure genocide, the reason why many escape to Thailand, and become refugees. This story of human rights violations on the Hmong-in-hiding must be told.

This Cuban film focuses on the history of foreign intervention in Laos, first by France and then by the United States. It shows how the liberation forces of Laos, under continuous U.S. bombing, were able to run an entire society in hidden caves and tunnels. Through the leadership of the Pathet Lao, they organized schools, cultural activities, clinics, as well as political and military activities literally underground.

2003年，摄影记者菲利普•布伦肯索普（Philip Blenkinsop）在老挝拍摄的一张照片引起了轩然大波。像照片中那样的人一共有12000多名，他们在被美国中央情报局（Central Intelligence Agency, CIA）抛弃后度过了长达三十多年的丛林生涯。该照片获得了当年的世界新闻摄影奖（World Press Photo Award），同时也为世人揭开了一段不为人知的故事。 　　1962年，关于老挝问题的日内瓦协议签署，美国从内战中的老挝撤军。然而实质上，美国政府却为中情局以人道主义援助为名在此进行秘密战争大开绿灯。一方面，中情局秘密招募泰国人并进行训练，使其加入有着“苗族雄狮”之称的苗族将军王宝（Vong Pao）的部队进行反老挝共产党的战斗，同时也能够隐藏美国干涉老挝内政的印记。另一方面，中情局在老挝Plain of Jars地区Long Tieng镇建立的基地与南越成掎角之势，使得老越间空中火力与地面部队能够相互支援。一时间，Long Tieng成为了世界上最神秘的地方和最繁忙的空港。美利坚航空（Air America）以私人公司的名义在老挝为“客户”运送人力和物资。 　　1971年，美国派出“同温层堡垒”B-52战略轰炸机对Plain of Jars地区进行空袭，由中情局的情报人员为其定位。此次美军空袭投下的炸弹数量竟然超过了二战中美军对德国和日本空袭投弹量的总和。1975年12月2日，老挝共产党正式执政，内战结束，王宝放弃武装斗争与鸦片种植生意，在中情局的帮助下前往美国并获得国籍，在美成立了老挝民族解放阵线（United Lao National Liberation Front），继续执老挝反共运动之牛耳。2008年，解密的文件显示，1959年老挝内战初期，美国政府曾打算使用核武器来结束战争，而后，当局改变初衷，发动了秘密战争。而今天，在老挝赛宋本行政特区（Xaisomboun Special Zone），田野上到处都是美军轰炸留下来的弹坑，诸多村寨由武器和炮弹的残骸建成，而当年被中情局和王宝抛弃，并成为难民的同胞们的故事也得以重见天日。 　　本片采访了诸多经历过当年老挝内战以及中情局秘密战争的人：Sousath Phetrasy，老挝共产主义游击运动组织老挝爱国战线（巴特寮）领导人Soth Phetrasy之子；记者弗雷德•布兰夫曼（Fred Branfman），1967-1971年间在老挝进行采访，1969年开始收集关于当年美军空袭场面的图画，同时也是世界上第一个曝光秘密战争真相的人；詹姆斯•莱利（James Lilley），1965-1967年间以外交身份为掩护，实际上为中情局老挝站二把手；温特•劳伦斯（Vint Lawrence），1962-1996年间为中情局在Long Tieng的情报官等。
