香月日輪と前嶋昭人による同題原作ジュブナイル怪談シリーズを全2話で合計約45分のOVA化。本作は2話収録のレンタル版が先行して流通後、1話ずつ収めたセル版ビデオが発売されている。腕っぷしは誰にも負けないイタズラ好きのてつし、ハンサムで頭脳明晰の椎名、そして肝っ玉が小さいものの心根は誰よりも優しいリョーチン。彼ら3人は町内で知らぬ者はいないとさえウワサされる悪ガキトリオ。彼らは不思議な薬屋「地獄堂」でその店主のオヤジと出合ったことを機に、人々をおびやかす幽霊や妖怪たちとの戦いをはじめることに。本作の総監督および演出には「美少女戦士セーラームーン」シリーズの佐藤順一が参加。本作は同年4月に公開された実写特撮映画版に続いてのリリースとなった。
