20世纪二十年代，新思想在中国大地广泛传播。偏居江南一角的封建陈家，终究走向解体，颂莲（田海蓉 饰）等一众年轻人开启了自我拯救的新生之路。为偿还去世父亲所欠债务，颂莲被迫嫁入陈家成为四姨太。怀揣新思想的颂莲与沉闷、压抑、封建的陈家环境格格不入，一场新女性与封建旧家庭的较量就此拉开帷幕。在对抗封建旧家庭的过程中，颂莲不仅努力自我救赎，还以自身行为感染和带动了陈家的其他姨太太以及年轻人。最终，封建大家庭被时代浪潮冲散。当其他人都寻得归宿与幸福后，颂莲也彻底挣脱了封建家庭的枷锁，实现了曾经许下的承诺。随着战火逼近，颂莲毅然投身救国救民的革命事业，历经艰难险阻，她终于迎来了自己期盼已久的新生。
