Jenny ist die hübsche, aber unerfahrene und kindlich-naive Tochter braver Bürger aus einfachen Verhältnissen. Eines Tages lernt sie einen charmanten Herrn kennen, der ihr schöne Augen macht, sie ausführt und behandelt wie eine Dame. In ihrer Sehnsucht nach der großen Liebe erkennt die arme Jenny nicht, dass der Kerl ein gewissenloser Verführer ist, der keine Liebe kennt und vor dem keine Frau sicher ist. 　　Als sie endlich das wahre Wesen ihrer „großen Liebe“ erkennt, ist es zu spät - zu sehr ist sie dem Mann verfallen, als dass sie den Schmerz über die Enttäuschung verwinden könnte. Sie verfällt in Depressionen, stumpft schließlich ab gegen ihr Elend und führt ein erbärmliches Leben. 　　Als sie eines Tages von der Verlobung ihres Verführers erfährt, bricht das ganze Leid noch einmal aus ihr hervor - so will Jenny nicht weiterleben, deshalb fasst sie schweren Herzens und voller Verzweiflung den Entschluss, ihrem leidvollen Leben ein Ende zu bereiten.
