We are in East Berlin, 1978. It’s summer, three years after Wassilly’s death. Nelly’s boyfriend and Alexei’s father died in a car accident in Russia. Since he is dead, Nelly wants to leave too. Away from the GDR, to leave the grief and the memories behind. To get a fresh start. That should be possible in the West, or so Nelly believes.

This extraordinary picture does not fit into any genre. It is a freak of nature, a acinematic oddity like no other. It took considerable bravery and imaginatio, or perhaps a bliss of ignorance as to the implication of one's actions (common to the artists), to make a film in which for the most part people recite the alphabet. The primer symbolises a key to the people communicate and perceive the world and traditions. The film is premeated with ugliness and lifelessness, which are extraordinary lit and beautifully captured by Jerzy Zielinski's camera. Tradition is dead, communication between people has become ossified in its banal formats, we all know the letters of the alphabet but cannot put them into sentences which would express out true selves.

格格巫　　《西方毕竟是西方》（West Is West ）可以看作是《东方就是东方》（East Is East ，1999）的续集，虽然导演换了，但故事依然一脉相承，仍旧是通过生活在英国的巴基斯坦家庭——可汗一家家庭成员的内部矛盾，来反应东西方文化的差异和冲突。上一部的故事发生在1971年，这部的故事发生在1975年，可汗一家从索尔弗徳市搬到了英格兰北部的曼彻斯特，这部的故事主要集中在父亲——60岁的乔治·可汗和最小的儿子——15岁的Sajid身上。Sajid深受父亲的巴基斯坦传统专制和学校混混欺压两重压迫，有成为问题少年的倾向，乔治无奈，决定把他送到生活在巴基斯坦旁遮普的前妻身边，而他抛下前妻已经30多年了……
