这部完成于2009年的纪录片记录的是两位毛泽东的模仿者。一位是来自湖南张家界农村的彭天；一位是来自四川绵阳的陈燕。 　　张秉坚最早是通过北京电影学院的刘一兵了解到业余特型演员的一些故事。 　　张秉坚在电影学院校园里看到，一年花两万五千块钱学费在此进修的湖南农民彭天整天穿着毛泽东的服装穿梭于帅哥美女当中，吃饭、走路、上课都不脱下他那一身行头。电影学院的学生喜好拿着机器在校园里拍来拍去，但没有人对这位“毛泽东”感兴趣。 　　彭天让张秉坚找到了一个毛泽东模仿者的切入点，他开始在网上搜索，找出了20多位毛泽东模仿者。 　　有很多毛泽东模仿者都很吸引他。比如，张秉坚在网上看到过某个山区火车站的扳道工喜欢扮演毛主席。“他在小扳道房里贴着毛主席像，火车一来，他把帽子一戴，拿个旗子指挥。毛主席不就是旗手嘛，指挥中国列车的走向，特别有象征意义。” 　　经过考虑选择，最后作为纪录片主角的是彭天和陈燕。陈燕的入选是因为她是中国惟一的毛泽东女性模仿者，她甚至因为模仿毛泽东而与家人闹翻。“‘毛主席’本身没有美学价值，有的是政治和社会意义，他们把毛主席的衣服一穿，就变成特型演员和艺术家了。” 　　《现成品》里有一个场景。四川一个圣诞节晚会的舞台上，杰克逊的模仿者、毛泽东的模仿者、拉斯维加斯的舞蹈陆续登场，其间还夹杂着骂日本人的民族主义情绪，所有这些东西混在一起，令人晕眩。 　　“威尼斯电影节主席马克·穆勒到我家来看过《现成品》的初剪，他说这是中国当代人类学的一个电影。这是中国当代社会文化的一个横切面，后毛泽东时代中国人的生活状态。”张秉坚说。

The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich; his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.
