The Lost World of Communism is a three-part British documentary series which examines the legacy of communism twenty years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall. Produced by Peter Molloy and Lucy Hetherington, the series takes a retrospective look at life behind the Iron Curtain between 1945 and 1989, focusing on three countries in the Eastern Bloc - East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania. Through film and television footage and the personal recollections of those who lived in these countries, the series offers a glimpse of what daily life was like during the years of Communist rule.

In 1919 workers arrive by train in the middle of the Taiga in order to construct a town. They fell trees and unload bricks from the train for that purpose. The newly arrived hero Vasilij is made chief of the depot, meets hostility and has to put down corruption.

The central tale is of the George Best of Russian football, a seventeen-year-old slinky, skilled forward with a teddy boy haircut, Eduard Streltstov, who was the inventor of a back-heeled pass, still known as "The Russian Pelé", whose career was wrecked by the KGB.

The leading gangsters of the world have chosen a new boss, Devraj, who is fronting a big company. Reporter Payal and Johnny are trying to get an interview with Devraj, but that fails, but soon Payal and Devraj fall in love. Payal's brother, who has saved Devraj from assassination by Glushan's henchmen is a police informer, working for his friend Inspector Amit, who's also in love with Payal. Amit tells Payal, that Devraj is a gangster, but she doesn't care. Devraj gets killed, and Amit, with the help of beaten up Payal is able to convict Devraj of the murder, who is sentenced to death. But a wounded gangster tells a different story, and Devraj is set free. Outraged about Payal's betrayal he seeks revenge, but her story gives the whole affair a completely different touch, but the puzzle still doesn't fit completely, and soon Payal and Devraj are in bigger trouble than before when they find out who really killed her brother...
