She worked at BMW for six years after studying physics before leaving in 1992 to pursue her passion for motorsports. In 1997, she became the rally's first female stage winner, and in 1999, she finished third overall as part of the first all-female team to stand on the winners' podium. Kleinschmidt won the fabled race in 2001, after 15 years of trying, and cemented her place in history.
